Maintenance of Fountains

Maintenance Guidelines for All Fountains

Water Usage Guidelines

You must always keep the appropriate level of water in your fountain. This is very critical, because if you let a fountain pump run without enough water it will burn out and need to be replaced. How often you need to add water will depend on your situation. Humidity levels, seasonal weather changes, exposure to wind and sun and splash factor will all play a role in how often you will need to add water. After you install your fountain you will get an idea of how often it needs to be refilled after enjoying it a few days. Just remember, keep the fountain pump fully submerged all the time.

If possible, use Distilled Water in your fountain. Tap water contains minerals like calcium (white scale) that build up over time. This build up can damage your fountain pump and degrade the appearance of your fountain basin. Using distilled water eliminates this problem. This is more practical with indoor fountains and particularly table top fountains since they don’t use much water to begin with. Indoor floor fountains and wall fountains also would benefit from using distilled water and should not be too much trouble to fill. Larger outdoor garden fountains may be more difficult to use distilled water in since you could more easily fill it with the hose while you are watering your flowers. If you do use tap water, you may have to take a few extra steps with the care and maintenance of your fountain to help it run and look great. These may include occasionally using CLR to remove the deposits, increased water replacement and cleaning the fountain pump more often.

Clarifier is the best solution if you must use tap water. It is a water treatment additive that prevents and removes the mineral stains created by calcium and other elements in tap water. It is safe for pets and is used in aquariums for the same purpose. You can find Clarifier on our web site, MaisonDecorInc.com

For your outdoor fountains, particularly Birdbath Fountains and Tiered Garden Fountains, you may experience algae growth over time. This typically only happens if you choose to turn your fountain pump off for some time but leave water in the basin, or if you do not change the water or clean out the basin for a long time. The movement of water created by the fountain pump is what keeps the water from becoming stagnant, which is when algae growth will begin and bugs (like mosquitoes) will move in.

To summarize – keep your fountain pump fully submerged, using distilled water if possible. If you do use tap water, consider getting some Protec to prevent calcium and mineral accumulation which can result in damage to the fountain pump and build-up on your fountain components.
